Body Politics

Today we were introduced into our new project 'Body Politics' This is about the power struggles and social control of the body. I knew I instantly wanted to research into lack of representation of disability within the fashion industry. I focused on brain storming within my own personal struggles with handling a disability at a developing teen age and how its affected my gaze on myself and the passion i have now to represent the underrepresented.

My initial thoughts for this project was to focus on my own personal struggles with disability and the lack of representation within the fashion industry. In my mind map i mainly focused on potentially capturing my scars (made from operations due to my disability) however after looking into it more and realising i wanted to focus more on styling i wanted to focus more on the back brace i had to wear prior to my operations.

For the last few days I have been shooting for the editorial. I decided to style around a back brace I had to wear at the beginning of my teen years. For those years I would hide it and feel ashamed by it and so I incorporated it into "streetwear" outfits to bring light to the underrepresentation of disability. I chose for the model to wear tights over her head to distort her identity, this also represents the lack of identity I felt for so many years. I also made the decision for the model not to be me as I wanted to have the raw feeling of being restricted, which it definitely is for someone not used to wearing it.

I experimented with how i would display my final images. I played around with creating a publication cover with the title being hand written by me adding more of a personal tone. I chose bright colours to contrast with the images as i think otherwise the title would get washed out by the image. In the end i decided the images with the titles would work better as posters. One thing i would change about my final outcome is potentially styling one more outfit to create a series of 3 images.
